Want a Scottish whisky this month? Can Do! Not just any Scottish whisky, but one that’s specially selected and aged by a team of experts with more credentials in their little finger than most! The Member Small Batch Extra this month is the delectable Firkin Whisky Co. Aultmore ‘Tawny Port’ 2010 from their ‘Firkin Rare’ Range. A single cask, limited edition, numbered bottling of only 273 bottles.
The Firkin Aultmore 2010 (in fact all of the Firkin Rare range) is aged in custom ‘hybrid’ casks made of alternating American first-fill bourbon and new French Limousin oak staves. These are then charred to order and seasoned with (in this case) Tawny Port before being filled with the new make.
When the ex- ‘Head of Malts’ at mega-booze-company Diageo (the man responsible for such things as Johnny Walker Blue Label and the ‘Classic Malts Collection’) teams up with the owner of ‘Blackadder International’ independent bottlers you get a marriage of decades of experience of whisky production with a newfound freedom to experiment! Oh – and also a Firkin lovely range of independently bottled single cask whiskies.
We first offered a Firkin Whisky Co. release back in early 2020 (2 actually) and the response was HUGE and we still get queries about it! And so, by popular demand, we’ve got another offering from this firkin awesome independent bottler with a firkin massive pedigree.
Nose: A big fruity oak hit on the nose leaves little doubt as to what style of whisky this is. There’s coffee and brown sugar notes too, but the big fruity notes are the feature for sure!
Palate: Seems to hesitate just a second before building to a mouth coating rush of pepper, more lovely stewed fruit and some cinnamon. The malt is there too, as a milk-arrowroot type flavour in the background.
Finish: Medium length and leaves a pleasant spice which begs to be doused by another dram.
