Let’s kick off 2025 with a Highland CASK STRENGTH single malt from the legendary Deanston Distillery. For the FIRST TIME in Australia and EXCLUSIVE to the Single Malt Whisky Club – The Deanston Virgin Oak Cask Strength Batch 1!
They say their Deanston Virgin Oak Cask Strength 2023 Edition Batch No.1 is like their founder, Brodie Hepburn, bold, brave and unapologetic, and at 58.5% it certainly packs a punch.
Deanston’s Virgin Oak Cask Strength Batch No.1 was first filled in American Oak Bourbon Barrels, some of the finest around. What sets it apart is that waxy citrus character which is true to the Deanston style. Then it was finished in Virgin, American Oak Barrels.
A non-chill filtered beauty, with nothing added other than the natural ingredients of pure clean water, malted barley and yeast.
In typical Deanston style, as a distillery they strive to be different and to do better, challenging the status quo and looking outside the square. That is this Batch No.1 to a tee.
It is awesome to visualise the environment of where a fine dram comes from. A picture in ones mind, of using an old cotton mill, which they turned it into a distillery, using hydro power to fuel their distillery operations by the River Teith in Scotland since 1966. You can picture the cool clear waters of the river, the clouds overhead and the lush greenery of trees, bushes and grass surrounding the river and distillery.
What is the final result you ask…a deeply golden honey colour and robust flavours of candied fruit, subtle crisp green apples, a touch of sweet honey and a twist of zesty citrus. A fine dram to enjoy neat or add a couple of drops of water to really open it up – or in that warm summer climate of Australia, on a cube of ice to soften and cool it down.

OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Strong nose of creaminess, touch of caramel, scorched dried fruits and soft subtle woody spices.
Palate: A sweet buttery flavour, with soft honey, crispy green apples, with a touch of butterscotch and maple syrup – and all with no burn.
Finish: Pleasant and eye-opening real tingling of the tongue and on the roof of my mouth. With the crispy green apples coming through with toffee, some subtle mixed citrus notes and that sweet honey touch.
It’s back for 2025! The $99 Mystery Malt!

ABOUT DEANSTON
Deanston is not your typical distillery. Built in 1785 as Adelphi Cotton Mill in the picturesque village of Deanston, the Deanston story has deep roots in the industrial history of Scotland. In 1965, after almost 200 years of trading, the cotton mill closed for good. It seemed the community’s days of trading were over.
Enter Brodie Hepburn. A true pioneer, he saw potential in the battered old cotton mill. Nestled along the banks of the River Teith, he saw water soft enough for whisky-making with the strength to power a distillery. He saw a passionate community and an honest work ethic to become true whisky makers. And so, Deanston Distillery first opened its doors in 1966.
- A former cotton mill transformed into the perfect place for making award-winning whisky.
- They harness the power of the River Teith. It’s not only our water source, but our hydro-energy source that fuels the distillery.
- Our passionate community of whisky makers use traditional methods to create our uniquely waxy new make spirit.
- Always non-chill filtered with no added colour to showcase a spirit that is brimming with flavour progression on the palette.
