Muirheads Silver Seal 1993

The Muirhead brand was established in 1824 by Chales Muirhead, who also established the Glenmorangie distillery. Picard Wines and Spiritueux (PW&S) purchased the Glen Moray distillery and brands from Moet Hennessy Louis Vitton in 2008. MHLV still own the Glenmorangie and Ardbeg distilleries and continue to focus on these single malts. Please welcome the Muirheads Silver Seal 1993 vintage.

Glen Moray has long been a contributor to BNJ and Martin’s VVO both legendary blended Scotch whiskies, which reinforces the quality of spirit we should expect in this single malt. Jim Murray has given it 89.5 in his latest bible so we’ve been very keen to try it.

Muirheads Silver Seal 1993 single malt whisky is a brand of the Picard Wines & Spiritueux from their Glen Moray distillery. It was distilled in 1993 and bottled in 2010. Ageing was performed in first fill Bourbon Barrels, which gives the whisky a distinct vanilla flavour. Ageing for 16 years gives the whisky a clean and smooth flavour. The nose is full of rich butterscotch and barley sugar and honey. On tasting, the mouth is immediately filled with a brandy cream richness, toffee and a distinct raisin character. The finish is long and drying with no astringency. It is a very enjoyable whisky with many layers and some interesting characteristics developed from the additional ageing. It is by no means a simple Speysider, with a rich complexity.

Aroma: A rich and full nose, with a strong character, there are notes of dried fruit, chocolate and herbs.

Flavour: Sweet and exceptionally well rounded. Toffee and barley sugar with a hint of smoke and peat.

Finish: Medium to long finish.
