It is the time of year for slow cooking, fire places, cuddling and peaty whiskies. What better than one of the peatiest of them all, Auld Reekie 10 year old. Now, this little fellow is a bit of an enigma. He hails from Islay, and is aged by the good folk at Duncan Taylor in refill bourbon barrels.
The word is that Auld Reekie is 100% Caol Ila, but who cares with reviews like this from Jim Murray in the 2010 Bible: “a near-perfect nose with indecipherable complexity, though salt and peat are at the nucleus. Breathtakingly scrummy, butter-wetness – perfect; peat levels – perfect; degrees of oak weight – perfect; spice injection – perfect. Could do with an injection of a surprise element for true perfection. Long and chewy; Fishermans Friends dipped in Comp Coffee and Hickory…… this is a must have dram for Islayphiles; true genius.”
