36 Short is one of those distilleries that just seem to fly ‘under the radar’ a bit and this month we hope to do something about that. Named in honour of their dad – Pando’s – suit size, the distillery has been out turning award winning spirits since 2016. Their rakija and gins are gold medal winning and we think their whisky isn’t going to be far behind.
36 Short Whisky is a true testament to local quality, made using 100% locally sourced S.A. malted barley. Each batch undergoes a two-week fermentation process, allowing the wash to fully develop its rich, distinctive character. The result is a whisky with a depth of flavour that reflects the essence of the region, offering an authentic and memorable tasting experience.
36 Short use a custom-made, 1200L copper pot still named “Pando” for distilling its spirits. This still is integral to our production process, providing a hybrid distillation approach that enhances the flavour and character of our range. Specifically, “Pando” is used for our single malt whisky, crafted with Australian malted barley and aged in American oak and bourbon barrels to achieve a rich, complex profile. This still and the distinctive aging process give 36 Short’s spirits their unique South Australian essence and smooth, full-bodied taste.
OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Lovely nuttiness at first, but underlying that is sweet plums and a striking floral herbaceousness
Palate: Rather dry on the palate at first sip, but a subtle spicyness develops around sweet vanilla pods, jammy notes and candied citrus peel.
Finish: A lovely tame warmth escorts the sweet num-nums and those nutty notes re-appear towards the end. IN fact on second dram, nutty brickle notes seem to amplify in a surprising, yet very pleasant way!
This is light, easy dramming whisky at it’s finest. There’s no pretentiousness and no challenges here, just a dram that everyone at the party will love – yep, it’s that simple. Be careful with this one though – it will evaporate quickly after opening – it’s just that moorish!

ABOUT 36 SHORT
36 Short Spirits was founded in 2014 by brothers Jon and Con to fulfill their late father Pando’s dream of distilling Rakia, a traditional Balkan spirit. Drawing on their family heritage, they named the brand after their father’s suit size, “36 Short,” as a playful tribute to his memory.
The company combines local ingredients with time-honored techniques to craft a unique range of spirits, including Rakia, gin, vodka, whisky, and limoncello, all produced with minimal additives and sourced from their family farm and Australian produce.
