Rolling Cask Glen Elgin

Glen Elgin Distillery, completed in 1898, was the last to emerge from the late-Victorian whisky boom, with its architect Charles Doig predicting it would be half a century before another distillery was built in Speyside—a forecast proved right when Glen Keith opened in 1958. Until 1950, the distillery relied entirely on paraffin power, with engines, turbines, and even lighting driven by it. Today, Glen Elgin operates six stills and continues to use traditional worm tub condensers, producing a delicate spirit that remains central to the White Horse blend.

This single cask Glen Elgin whisky is the textbook example of why you should never judge a whisky by its colour. The Rolling Cask Glen Elgin is pale-straw coloured at best. Nothing like the ‘traditional’ picture of a sherry matured whisky. But make no mistake – this is a sherry bomb in no uncertain terms, big, luscious, fruity and delicious!

For our collectors out there who are collecting the entire series….this is the third and final release in the Kung Fu series from Rolling Cask.

OUR TASTING NOTES

Nose: Rich deep and fruit-cakey. Interestingly, there’s also some crisp granny smith toffee-apple notes around the edges too.

Palate: So scrumptiously oily on the tongue with Christmas fruit mince crashing in waves along with butterscotch and just a subtle gingeryness on the side.

Finish: Thoroughly satisfying finish with more of those fruits and spices dancing around Werther’s original caramel, coffee and dark chocolate.

It’s a little weird tucking into a ‘sherry bomb’ that’s as pale as a virgin oak or bourbon matured whisky is ‘supposed to be’ – especially after hyping myself up with this writing about it’s [lack of] colour. Remember the clear colas of the 90’s? That kind of disconnect.

Make absolutely NO mistake about it – this is a sherry bomb as big as any you’ve tried. Lush, oily, fruity and massively morish.

FROM ROLLING CASK

Nose: A classic sherry monster, orange-y and pure old-style sherry influence, very integrated, not overpowered. Also very mineral (soil), salty, and malty. Some oak, overall, bright, fresh and fruity.
Palate: Wool and leather, sweet and orangy sherry influence, very very intense and juicy, very balanced and integrated. Dried mango, earthy spices. Then towards minty liquor, very minty indeed. Definitely a great sherried whisky with no flaws.
Finish: Long, Chinese dry dates, dark chocolate, no overpowered sherry, just a perfect blend between sherry and malt.
