The Mac-Talla Pedro Ximenes Feis Ile 2023 is made from a blend of 26 PX-Matured Islay single malt casks from an unnamed Islay distillery and bottled at a muscular 54.6%abv.

Selected and bottled by a family that is synonymous with Islay whisky – the Morrisons. Previously the owners of Islay Icons Bowmore and Auchentoshen (as well as the highland Glen Garioch distillery), the Morrison family is now independently selecting and bottling Islay single malts under the ‘Mac-Talla’ brand.

Do you think of burning rubber as a pheromone? Is ‘hospital-forward flavour profile’ music to your ears (and nose!)? Does the prospect of sipping on iodine-laced bitumen make you shiver with anticipation? Does smelling freshly opened band-aid give you goose-bumps?

If any of these statements make sense, you may just be a peat freak. This month we have a whisky from the spiritual home of peat.

All jokes aside – if you like peated whisky (and it’s a pretty polarising category for sure) you are going to LOVE this one.

Nose: Undoubtedly all about the peat. It’s burnt rubber, fresh laid bitumen with waves of sea-weedy iodine all slathered on top of a rich jammy-sweet base.

Palate: Big and oily as you’d expect with a medium burst of spice strait up. There’s rich stewed fruits, sure… but those peat notes definitely hang around and dominate.

Finish: A seriously big, looong and chewy finish. More (and plenty more) of all of the above. Rich, smoky, iodine-y, salty and …. DELICIOUS!

This is peated whisky – and make no mistake, it’s peated for effect! This is pugilistic peat for the die-hard fans! If you don’t like peat you will HATE this. However, if you – like me – are a fan of peated whisky, then you really can’t afford to miss out on this (and we really don’t have very many of these at all). It’s just so delightfully, bigly – almost industrially – peaty with all those black and tarry notes we ‘smoke-heads’ love.

This Limited Edition release for the 2023 Feis Ile festival was created from twenty-six exceptional, hand-selected casks of Islay Single Malt, with the influence of PX Sherry bringing a rich, fruit sweetness, as well as structure and depth to this smoky Islay single malt scotch whisky.

Deep copper in colour, the nose is brimming with maritime smoke, burnt toffee, stewed berries, bonfire, dates, rum and raisin with orange marmalade.
