The Scotch Whisky bargain of the year? We think so.

Let’s be honest. Finding a genuine 15-year-old Scottish single malt for under $140 these days feels a bit like spotting a unicorn in a bottle shop. Then finding one that’s exclusive to SMWC in Australia, from a tiny, handcrafted Speyside distillery, with a year’s worth of sherry finishing on top? Well, that’s where things get seriously interesting.

This month’s Malt of the Month is Spey 15 Year Old, and we suspect a lot of members are going to be kicking themselves if they let this one slip through their fingers.

🇸🇨 Small Distillery. Big Character.

When people think Speyside whisky, they often picture enormous distilleries pumping out millions of litres a year. SPEY is the opposite.

Nestled in the foothills of the Cairngorms, the entire distillery operates from a single building and draws its water from the historic River Tromie mill lade. Its tiny copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland, helping create a spirit packed with flavour and texture rather than the ultra-light style often associated with the region.

This is old-school whisky making. Patient, hands-on and proudly small. And you can taste it.

⏳ Fifteen Years in the Making

Fifteen years is a magical age for Speyside whisky. Young enough to retain those bright orchard-fruit flavours. Old enough to develop real depth, richness and complexity. SPEY takes that sweet spot and turns it up another notch.

The whisky spends 14 years maturing in ex-bourbon STR casks, developing layers of vanilla, honey and fruit-driven sweetness before being transferred into first-fill sherry casks for a final 12-month finish.

The result? A whisky that delivers the best of both worlds. You get the creamy vanilla and honeyed character you’d expect from quality bourbon cask maturation, wrapped in a gorgeous layer of dried fruits, dark chocolate and gentle spice from the sherry finish.

Whilst ‘Chariot’ barley is commonly used at Speyside distillery (according to my research) – I can’t categorically say it is used in this expression, but I’d say it’s better than even odds. What I do know is the fermentation times at Spey distillery are between 5 and 7 and a half days long which is an incredible difference to the ‘normal’ Scottish whisky ferment time of around 2-4 days. Distilled in Spey’s smaller than average stills, the 15yo is then set to mature for 14years in ex-bourbon STR casks. Prior to bottling the spirit is then transferred to first fill sherry casks for 12 months worth of sherry-finishing.

🍎🍫 What’s It Like In The Glass?

This is one of those dangerous whiskies. The kind where you’re certain you’ll only have one dram… then somehow the bottle level mysteriously drops.

Expect:

  • Soft vanilla and floral notes
  • Sweet orchard fruits
  • Candied peel and minced fruit richness
  • Dark chocolate and polished oak
  • A surprisingly rich, oily mouthfeel
  • A long, elegant finish that just keeps going

Brad sums it up perfectly:

“This is one of those unassuming whiskies that are easy for a newbie to embrace, but complex enough to keep a whisky nerd… happily quaffing for bottles worth of time.”

That’s a rare trick.

OUR TASTING NOTES

Nose: Gentle, sweet fruitiness, Pascal Jubes (or is it Red-Frogs?) in a just-opened packet with notes of vanilla and Jasmine flower with a slight oakey, mustiness.

Palate: Nice and oily on the palate (I didn’t expect such a mouthfeel out of this bottled at 40%abv – I’m impressed!). Very little pepper. Lots of ‘classic’ sherry finished notes there, but nicely subdued allowing them to compliment the ex-Bourbon STR cask qualities. Nice minced fruit notes, some candied peel and dark chocolate, more floral notes and a hint of oak.

Finish: Long, chewy, and frankly, delicious! Never overwhelming or peppery, and just the tiniest smokiness as it fades. A nice polished leatheryness comes out in the finish as well with more dark chocolate.

This is one of those ‘unassuming’ whiskies that are easy for a newbie whisky drinker to embrace, but complex enough to keep a whisky nerd and their mate(s) happily quaffing for, well, bottles worth of time! You get those sherry components, but not in a huge, overwhelming way. There’s enough sweetness to make it easy for anyone to sip – but not too much that it cloys or over-sweetens. I was pleasantly surprised by just how viscous it was when I first tasted this, too – it has a lot of body for a 40%-er!

FROM SPEY DISTILLERY

SPEY’s 15 Year Old single malt brings together tradition and innovation in a whisky shaped by more than a decade in Shaved, Toasted, Re‑Charred (STR) casks. Developed with Dr Jim Swan’s pioneering STR technique, this rare maturation has created a spirit of deep fruit, warm spice and velvety richness. Matured to produce a calm, confident depth that only time can create.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep mahogany with ruby black depth — the unmistakable mark of long Port STR
maturation.

Nose: Rich and steady. Blackcurrant jam, plum compote and cherry liqueur rise first, followed by polished oak, cocoa nibs and soft vanilla pod. A subtle thread of sweet tobacco leaf, toasted sugar and warm clove.

Palate: Full, velvety and confidently structured. Dark berry compote, molasses and spiced caramel lead with generous sweetness. Notes of black cherries, roasted oak, nutmeg and cocoa build slowly, giving the whisky the weight and authority.

Finish: Long, warm and atmospheric. Black fruits, leather, cocoa dust and sweet oak linger, gradually giving way to dry spice and a gentle warmth.
