A whisky with one foot in the tropics…
Imagine the smoky, windswept shores of Scotland meeting the sunny Caribbean and Mexico – Welcome to the Ledaig Castaway.
Castaway combines Ledaig’s distinctive island peat smoke with the influence of rum and tequila casks bottled at 61.1%.
A first for the distillery – This is the first Ledaig release to combine Caribbean rum and Mexican tequila casks. It’s an opportunity to explore a new direction for a well-established Scottish single malt.
Smoke from the Isle of Mull – Ledaig is the peated single malt made at Tobermory Distillery, on the Isle of Mull. Its signature maritime smoke provides the backbone of Castaway, with the sweetness and spice of the casks adding a new dimension.
Tropical fruit meets peat smoke – Think grilled pineapple, ripe mango, caramelised banana and bright lime. These tropical flavours sit alongside earthy smoke, creating a whisky that is both familiar and surprising.
Tequila casks bring something different – The Mexican tequila casks contribute an intriguing herbal agave character. Combined with the sweetness of Caribbean rum casks, they help create a layered whisky that goes well beyond the usual peated malt profile.
A big, bold 61.1% ABV – Bottled at natural cask strength, Castaway delivers a powerful, full-bodied dram. There’s plenty of intensity for those who love a robust whisky, and a little water can open up the flavours beautifully.
Ledaig is the ‘peated alter ego’ of Tobermory distillery. The only distillery on the Isle of Mull (itself an alien, ocean windswept landscape), Tobermory traditionally produces Ledaig for around half its production year, but growing demand for its distinctive peated malt has led to a greater focus on Ledaig production in recent years.
The Castaway is a limited release worldwide (of around 600 bottles). It’s a ‘NAS’ (No Age Statement) whisky – and despite my deepest delving, digging, googling and AI-ing there is precious little information on the age of the whisky or precise details on the Rum and Tequila casks used to age it. I can tell you the rum casks are from the Caribbean, and the Tequila casks from Mexico.
Here’s what surprised us.
Despite the rum. Despite the tequila. Despite the 61.1% ABV. This is still unmistakably Ledaig.
The peat is there from the first sniff. Coastal, earthy and distinctly maritime. But weaving through that smoke are flavours you don’t normally find in an island malt: grilled pineapple, mango, lime zest and caramelised banana. Then comes a thread of herbal agave courtesy of the tequila casks. The maritime smoke never leaves, it comes back wrapped in layers of tropical fruit, spice and sweetness that simply don’t exist in traditional peated maturation Strange on paper. Delicious in practice.
The whisky equivalent of a layover gone right.
Imagine a barrel leaving the Isle of Mull. Instead of heading straight home, it somehow ends up island-hopping through the Caribbean, spends a few nights in Mexico, then returns carrying a suitcase full of stories – That’s Castaway.

Why we’re excited about it.
Not because it’s rare. Not because it’s exclusive. Not because it’s cask strength. Those things are nice. We’re excited because even after thousands of whiskies, it’s getting harder to find something genuinely different. This is genuinely different.
The first Ledaig release ever matured through a combination of Caribbean rum and Mexican tequila casks. A familiar distillery travelling into completely new territory.
In the glass
- Smoke: campfire embers and coastal air.
- Fruit: grilled pineapple, ripe mango and citrus.
- Spice: pepper, chilli warmth and oak.
- Wild card: a subtle herbal agave note that keeps appearing when you least expect it.
Every sip seems to swing between Scotland and somewhere much warmer.
Final Thought
Some bottles are bought because they’re sensible. Castaway isn’t one of them. It’s the bottle you buy because you’ve never tasted anything quite like it. And honestly, sometimes that’s the best reason of all.

OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: A healthy dose of burnt rubber, wood ash and iodine (oh YEAH BABY!) over pineapple chunks, crushed macadamia nuts, freshly grated granny smith apples and a hint of jasmine.
Palate: A luxurious and viscous mouthfeel. OH yeah – more of that peat right up front (no ‘subtle wafts of peat influence’ here) but also a delicious sweetness that runs right through it. Banana custard, mango and more of that spicy pineapple sweet/tartness with a nuttiness developing as well.
Finish: As the palate winds down to the finish, the sweetness takes a decidedly maritime turn with bug umami/salty notes backing up [yet] more of those delicious peat goodies. It’s a rich cacophony of tropical fruit, salted beer nuts, and notes of gale force sea spray.
This is a BIG whisky on several fronts. A massive peat influence straight up in a huge ABV monster. But – apart from the luxurious mouthfeel, you’d never know it – the alcohol is just so very well integrated that it presents little challenge to the palate (ok, ok – until the next day, I grant you!). Â
This is a peat monster like I’ve never tried before – those tropical fruit and apple notes just marry so well those tarry, iodine peat notes. Be warned – this is a peat lover’s dream. So well structured, so gentle for such high ABV, the mix of the peat, fruit, nuts and salt – all go together to make this one of the most memorable whiskies (for me) of 2026!
Bartender – pour me ANOTHER!

FROM TOBERMORY DISTILLERY
On our Hebridean island home, the sea shapes every element of our craft. Into this rugged place come casks once home to Caribbean Rum and Mexican Tequila – travellers from warmer worlds that lend unexpected richness to our bold, peated spirit. A dynamic marriage of distant sweetness and island smoke, inspired, as always, by Mull.
A rare dual-cask maturation of Caribbean Rum and Mexican Tequila. The result is a whisky of vivid contrast and harmony: maritime peat wrapped in grilled pineapple, ripe mango, and bright citrus. Beneath the fruit lies a thread of earthy agave, lifted by salted vanilla, warm spice and a long, smoke-laden finish shaped by Mull’s briny air.
Ledaig Castaway is a first for us. Bringing rum and tequila casks together with our unmistakeable peated spirit adds an exciting dimension – ripe fruit, citrus and a touch of agave sitting alongside that coastal smoke. It’s bold, a bit unexpected and yet still feels true to the spirit of our distillery – Julieann Fernandez, Master Blender
NOSE: Coastal peat smoke with caramelised banana, lime zest and vanilla. Green apple, white pepper and a hint of sea spray.
PALATE: Bold smoky spice leads, balanced by grilled pineapple, brine and herbal agave. Black pepper, charred citrus and rich toffee develop through the mid-palate.
FINISH: Long and warming – smouldering peat embers, demerara sweetness, chilli heat and a final twist of lime.
