As veteran SMWC members will know, The Firkin Whisky Co is a legendary boutique independent bottler, co-founded by veteran blender Mike Collings along with fellow whisky-maker Robin Tucek.

With FIVE decades of experience behind him, Mike Collings helped create some of the most famous Scotch whiskies — including Johnnie Walker Blue & Green Labels, as well as classic single-malt collections and iconic blends under large spirits houses.

Now normally Firkins sell at $140 – $150 a bottle but to keep the Elves happy you can get a bottle of Firkin plus the 2 glasses and Hip Flask for only $119! 

Firkin’s ethos is refreshingly irreverent: they produce small-batch, single-cask single-malts — matured or finished in bespoke “double-oak” casks that combine American ex-bourbon oak with new French Limousin oak, often seasoned with fortified wines like Madeira, Marsala or Tawny Port.

The result: whiskies with bold, layered flavours — sherry sweetness, spice, oak, and regional character — but packaged with humour and humility. As Firkin puts it: “life’s too short to be serious … when your single malt is this good, you don’t need to be pretentious.”

Nose: Big leathery notes with a creamy caramel backdrop, mushed sultanas, grated apple with a flowery herbaceous notes mixing in nicely

Palate: The 63%abv hits with a ‘whoosh’ rather than a ‘bang’. It’s B.I.G. – but not like a sledgehammer if you get my drift. That huge alcohol rush diminishes (evaporates? ;)) quickly with remarkably little residual heat or pepper and is replaced with huge flavours – big malty, vanilla cream, marmalade, bubble-gum notes with a waft of aniseed in the mix.

Finish: Rather crisp in the finish. Whilst the sweet, fruiter notes dissipate early on, there’s a real gingery warmth that lasts and lasts with bursts of Christmas biscuit spices swirling all around it – and there’s also somewhat of a salty-caramel ‘tang’ there as well in the fadeout.

This is a massive Tassy dram that – at 63% abv – could really knock your head off… if it wasn’t just so damn well behaved and cuddly. Instead of pounding you into submission, it gives your whole upper body a bear-hug from inside somehow. Think John Candy rather than Jack Dempsey. And like John Candy – this whisky isn’t a one trick pony. It transforms throughout the journey – the nose is more savoury than the fruity palate, with a long, spice-driven finish.

For those unaware, Mike Collings is a giant in the whisky industry. During his time with Diageo (world largest spirits business) he was the mind behind the famous Johnny Walker Blue plus a plethora of whiskies that are almost ubiquitous in any bottle shop around the world. In other words, Mike has been crafting ‘household name’ whiskies for the worlds largest brands for over 50 years.

Mike Collings could have retired with an incredible track record in whisky. He had created Johnnie Walker Blue & Green Labels, The Classic Malts, Rare Malts, Distillers Edition, Flora & Fauna series, Cardhu and Royal Lochnagar. That’s pretty Firkin good as far as CVs go.

Mike’s been working in whisky for 40 years. You couldn’t blame him for packing it in and putting his feet up. That would have been the sensible thing to do. But Mike is many things. Sensible isn’t one of them. Mike stirs the pot. He thinks about things differently and always asks: ‘what if …’?

So, he found himself enjoying a few drams in a Tokyo bar thinking: what if I created a whisky that was unique on the single cask single malt market?

So he did. And it’s Firkin awesome whisky.
