For second time in 20 years we are featuring a blended scotch…and for very good reason. To say this whisky is pretty tasty AND sensational value for money is a bit of an understatement…For $99 you get a 19-year-old blend of single malts from Glengoyne, Glenrothes, Macallan and Tamdhu – The Rolling Cask 19 Year Old Blended Whisky
Some grain whisky from North British is added in to balance out the blend. The final product is then left in American Oak hogsheads for several months allowing the perfect marriage of all the components. Bottled at 45.8% the whisky is quite viscous and infinitely quaffable.
Rolling Cask is a very small, Aussie Indy Bottler that has flown under the radar with mainstream whisky fans in Oz – but is rapidly gaining a bit of a cult following both here, and in the bar-scene of such places as Hong Kong and Singapore. The owner is currently in Japan on a selling trip as the interest there is high as well.
As this was distilled, aged and bottled in Scotland – it’s labelling MUST be compliant with the British regulations. Hence – the youngest whisky in this blend is 19 years old. Even the North British grain component has been cask-aged – and I’m reliably informed this component is 23 years old.
Nose: Big honey & citrus notes right out of the gate. Lots of baking spices there as well as sultanas and some grassy/floral notes.
Palate: Lovely and viscous – and a really scrumptious figgy/date-y flavour straight right away. The first sip is a little peppery, but that settles very quickly (neck pour, perhaps?) and by the second sip this becomes a great big softy! Those fruit flavours are complimented by honey notes, some dark chocolate and marzipan too!
Finish: The finish isn’t particularly long or ‘fireworks incredible’- but there’s certainly nothing negative about it. Rather a gradual decline of the sweetness.
Look, I get it. I only drink single malt whisky as well. But sometimes something comes along that may be a little out of your ‘thing’ – but it’s well worth your trying regardless. And the Rolling Cask 19yo Blend is one of those things. This is unashamedly, easy-quaffing whisky – and for $99, well worth getting into your favourite glass!
Nose: orange, red grapes, cantaloupe, clotted cream fudge
Palate: Christmas, mulled wine, clove studded orange
Finish: toasted bread, boozy currants- long finish
