A first for the SMWC – until now, we’ve never before offered a wine!  That’s right – your WHISKY club is offering a non-distilled beverage as our Members Extra this month…and it isn’t even made from malt!

But of course, this is not just any wine…It’s a very special Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir, the very wine whose barrels were used to mature this months whisky in! This is a special opportunity to sample a perfectly matched pair from an absolutely brilliant distillery and vineyard!

This Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir is a superb example of ‘farm to bottle’ production.  This wine is completely produced at Iron House – from growing the grapes to crushing, fermenting and ageing. Aged for around 12 months on the wood and then bottled and laid to mature until it’s ready to drink.

OUR TASTING NOTES

Bouquet: Sweet cherries and plumbs and black berries with a backbone of mild tannins. There’s also a savoury quality floating around in the mix.

Palate: Medium bodied with mild white pepper and more of those red fruits in spades. A little cola flavour too, in there somewhere. A nice balance between the dry oak notes, and sumptuous red and black fruits.

Finish: Rich, long and satisfying. Chewy and mouth-watering with all those big fruits and berries washing over mild spice as it slowly fades into the occasion!

This is a superb, rich and complex red that sits just as comfortable around Mum’s Sunday roast as it does a takeaway curry. It presents well strait after opening, but if you give it 10-15 minutes to breath after opening, you’ll notice a much fuller, rounder quality to this practically perfect Pinot.

Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir

Not only is this a superb wine in its own right, we also offer this as a fairly unique opportunity for our members to get a first-hand understanding of what is passed along to the whisky from the cask that matures it. It’s an interesting exercise to offer an insight into what flavours are passed along, and which are not represented in the resultant whisky.

Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir

FROM IRON HOUSE

From the moment of bottling, this wine presents beauty and strength with delicacy.

As a classically structured Tasmanian single block red, this wine is in no way to be taken lightly, albeit being a subtle and soft red.

To start with, the magnificent ruby colour is a treat for the eye with delightful cherry and dark stone fruits, white flesh plum, soft black tea and white pepper earthy tone present on tasting. Possibly a larger nose than front palate yet delivering a great depth of the varietal.

A soon to be classic Tasmanian East Coast Red

ABOUT IRON HOUSE

Here at the little brewery/vineyard/distillery by the sea, we carefully tend each vine to create our gorgeous Tasmanian wines with an authentic sense of place. At Iron House we put all of our love into the land. In the early years we focused on vineyard development and landscaping with an ethical outlook to grow a healthy, sustainable crop every year.

Nestled under the watchful gaze of St. Patrick’s Head State Reserve and mere meters from the Tasman Ocean, we’re ideally situated to grow many different varieties of grape. Graced with plentiful sun, the cleanest air and the freshest water, our vines have thrived in the 10yrs the have been developing/growing, producing a veritable microcosm of flavours.

We are proud to release these beautiful Tasmanian wines unto wine lovers everywhere.

We recommend matching them with great cheeses, fruits, specialty meats and of course, good friends and laughter.
