  • This release very special indeed – An EXCLUSIVE offering of exceptional whisky from Amber Lane for our whisky loving members The Amber Lane Distillery SMWC Edition. This incredible whisky was blended from 4 large casks (Amber Lane only use large format casks) – one a 30+ year old 250L Oloroso cask from Fernando de Castilla (a legendary Spanish bodega), a Spanish Pedro Ximenez, an Aussie Apera and a Heaven Hill Bourbon cask. They have all been marrying for around a month in the Spanish Oloroso cask before bought down to 50% for bottling.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Such an enticing and complex nose – it’s a distinct malty core wrapped with a tempting fruity sweetness, but there’s also green olives and faint leather notes there too. Palate: Luscious, mouth coating oilyness – very syrupy indeed. A brief flash of white pepper burst precedes juicy fruit chewing gum notes, vanilla, honey and chocolate with sweet vanilla-malty biscuits (Malt-O-Milk?) to round it out. Finish: long, chewy and thoroughly delicious with big ginger notes, chocolate, espresso coffee and freshly cut vanilla pods and (is that?) some all-spice… all in a big Milk Arrowroot embrace. Big, fruity vanilla goodness, with a heart of pure malt. This is a big, complex and rewarding whisky that really wants you to sift through it’s many flavours and tones and notes. I’m just so enamoured with the way the malt pushes through the lovely fruit notes.

  • All the way from the Emerald Isle, a limited edition, 16 year old Irish whiskey and we have the entire Australian allocation of it. For all of our Irish whisky lovers out there – The Barr an Uisce 16yo Single Malt Whiskey. This whiskey is a limited edition (only 1803 numbered bottles), un-chill filtered, 16 year old cracker of a whiskey. Unusually for an Irish, the Barr an Uisce 1803 16 year old is double-distilled rather than triple distilled.  It has been aged in first fill Kentucky Bourbon barrels and is presented at 46% abv.  Not only that – as an added bonus, it’s in a 750ml bottle! Ahh… 750ml bottles…  It’s been awhile since we featured a whiskey with an ‘e’ in it. As lovers of Irish single malt whiskey well know – they are not exactly in abundant supply in this day and age all the way down here!
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Very fresh and fruity on the nose. Lot’s of pears and citrus-y notes first up, but then a distinct salted caramel swirl soon becomes apparent. Palate: The citrus and white fruits go through to the palate – as does that interesting salted quality. More vanilla and also some honey there. Nice and crisp, fruity with a sweet roundness. Finish: Honey notes roll around the vanilla and fruit as it slowly fades.

So, you LOVE a PEATED whisky? So, roll out the red carpet for the Barrelhouse 28 Hungarian Red Wine Cask, exclusive to The Single Malt Whisky Club. A cask strength, peated whisky from the legendary Corowa Distillery, aged by indy bottler ‘Barrelhouse 28’ in a Hungarian Oak Red Wine Cask and bottled at an earth shattering 63.5%. This is a big, peaty single cask whisky! If you like to knock around the ‘peated side of the tracks’ – this will delight even the most ardent Islay-o-phile. Those with a penchant for burnt rubber and iodine will feel right at home with this one. This is an absolutely mammoth peated whisky, chosen by us to satisfy our most ardent peat fans (and we know we have quite a few in our ranks). PEAT PEOPLE – this one’s for YOU!
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: A big hospital bandaid at first – very iodiney and medicinal. There’s also a musty-ness that sits on top of a very sweet and luxuriously rich stewed fruit vibe. But the peat is the star of the nose on this one. Palate: Such a thick and syrupy mouthfeel – it really coats the palate well. Some pepper in the initial taste (but at 63.5%ABV a little heat is to be expected) - this cuts right down with a mere drop of water though. There’s all the stewed fruit, chocolate and even honey you could wish for swirling around there, but the oak is not lost in all of that either. Finish: Finishes as strong as it starts. Lovely warm mouthfeel and those peaty num-nums keep rolling around and around, lubricated till the end with more syrupy stewed fruit, espresso coffee and chocolate notes.

  • After rave reviews from its initial release in 2021 and members wanting more, we have an Australian stunner of a whisky special release – the Chief’s Son ‘The Aiden 2016’ all the way from the multi-award winning distillery on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. With these credentials it will take pride of place in your collection.
    • From one of the oldest casks at Chief‘s Son
    • The first of the special ‘Family’ casks ever to be released
    • Casks originally coopered in France and used for Red Wine then Sherry
    • Re-coopered for whisky casks by none other than legendary cooper, Andrew Young from Seppeltsfield Estate
    • Each individually numbered bottle is individually laser etched
We are super excited to offer an exclusive whisky made with family foremost in mind by Chief’s Son Distillery.  In fact, this whisky is all about family - make way for the Chief’s Son ‘The Aiden 2016’. This whisky is out of one of the oldest casks in the Chief’s Son bond-store. Hand filled in 2016 by Stuart’s son, Aiden – and made available exclusively to the Single Malt Whisky Club.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Some mustiness at first but the sweetness soon materialises in the form of maple syrup, with a touch of bubble gum thrown in, some apricots and delicate leathery notes. Palate: Lovely rich oily mouthfeel here. A sweet yet nutty palate – with scorched almond brittle, caramel and slightly burnt toffee to boot. There’s also a suggestion of liquorice with just a little pepper at he back of the mouth. Finish: More nut brittle, pepper and oak swirl over and around each other in a flurry of rich caramel syrup. A lovely balance between the roast nuts and sweet caramel here – not too sweet but definitely not dry. Interestingly, on sharing my tasting notes with the Chief’s Son crew, it was revealed to me that their stills are electrically heated and they do get a lot of caramelisation of sugars onto the internal heating elements – hence the caramel notes. This whisky is just so very more-ish. I bet you’ll have poured another before the finish has run it’s course from the first dram!

Hold onto your hats and please welcome Craft Works Distillery’s ‘Some May Welcome Change’. A whisky dedicated to our little club (hint – look at the initials in the name!) and a new direction from Crafty – 1st fill Oloroso Sherry Matured whisky! His first bone-fide sherry bomb!
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: For me it’s straight-up chocolate at first. But then some really difficult to pinpoint notes – some aniseed, some paprika and then just a smidge of nail polish remover is hiding there as well. Palate: At first it’s a rather dry mouthfeel. But it creeps around the inside of your cheeks with very little alcohol burn (surprisingly at this abv)… and then the fruit explodes! Plums, sultanas and mixed peel individually, then all stewed together with a real marzipan thing going on at the same time. Finish: Long and complex – so many flavours rolling around in there! The stewed fruit persists, but is overthrown by coffee and the aniseed makes a comeback just as the curtain start to draw closed.

  • This 16 year old Pedro Ximinez finished whisky from BENRINNES is perfectly accompanied by the 12 year old Oloroso finished GLENROTHES. Normally, the Darkness releases are finished for around 6 months in their specialist casks but this amazing dram has been aged in ex-bourbon casks for the initial 15 years of life but ‘our’ Benrinnes 16 year old has had a full YEAR of finishing to take on the intense sherry characteristics from the Pedro Ximinez Casks. What makes Darkness so special in the whisky world? Well, their flagship bottling – Darkness 8 Year Old – has won HUGE accolades since launching in 2019, including Double Gold at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold Medals at the 2020 and 2021 World Whiskies Awards, and 96 points from the IWSC in 2021 and 2022…so imagine how good a 16 year old release (or a 12 for that matter) is?
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Lots of jammy notes up front, but also crushed nuts and sticky date pudding round out the nose nicely. Palate: A big, meaty dram by all measures. Lovely rich mouthfeel, and a touch of white pepper spiciness. Salty plumbs, chocolate and cinnamon, blackberries by the bucketload, stewed plumbs and vanilla pods. There’s a real meatiness to this dram as well, with a body like a footballer – Big and Solid, Rich and Round! Finish: Delicious chocolate notes swirl around white pepper, coffee, dark chocolate and stewed fruit. The pepper offsets the abundant sweetness and sweet spices perfectly! So big, so fruity, so jammy and good! As chewy as juicy fruit- and almost as fruity! It’s got a massive depth of flavour and handles 51.3%ABV with grace and style. A Big, Sweetie, Meaty Dram that will hug you tight in the cold!

    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: A solid base of granny smith apples underlies fresh and vibrant floral and grassy notes with a citrus tang. Palate: Wonderful, buttery, creamy mouthfeel luxuriously coats the palate before a wave of poached pear, vanilla custard, honey and buttered milk arrowroot biscuits and a lovely walnut flavour chase each other around the palate. Finish: Lovely medium peppery-ness leads the charge to the finish, but it’s the sweet, floral notes that linger longest! This is a wonderfully easy drinking dram (especially after a splash of water to open it’s cask strength goodness) and an almost textbook demonstration of fantastic highland spirit matched with first class oak. All the biscuits, nuts, vanilla and buttery mouthfeel you could ask for in a bourbon cask matured whisky.

  • A Firkin fabulous 10 year old Speyside dram that is Firkin’s very first Dailuaine release ever – the Firkin 49 Dailuaine 2012! What a Firkin fabulous way to get 2023 underway than a 10 year old dram from a legend in the whisky business – Mike Colling’s Firkin brand. This is the Firkin Whisky Co’s first Dailuaine release and Mike was eager for the SMWC to premier it to the world! We are pretty proud to have been chosen by this whisky legend to premier a new dram from this master whisky-man!
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Very fresh and herbal on the nose. Newly cut grass, fresh orange juice and flowering jasmine. There is also sweet element that I’m having trouble putting my finger on – toffee, perhaps? Palate: Absolutely magnificently balanced spirit – wonderful oaky notes drizzled over milk arrowroot bikkies, light fruitiness and just a hint of biscuit spices. Round, rich and sweet (but not overly) with a lovely crispness to it as well. Finish: Long and satisfying with a real peanut-butter edge there. Granny Smith apple juice pops in and out as the mild pepper notes swirl around the subtle fruity tones. This is truly easy-dramming whisky. Light on the palate, yet full and round and fruity. Big on the palate but in no way overwhelming or hot – just perfect, in fact. This latest offering from Mike and his Firkin Whisky brand is very possibly the best Firkin I’ve tasted. And that’s no mean feat let me tell ya! “That’ll do Mr Collings…. that’ll Firkin do!"

  • Get ready for one of the FIRKIN greatest whiskies we have ever released! With spirit from the Tullibardine Distillery, aged in Firkins own custom casks that are made of alternating staves of American and French oak seasoned with both Amontidillado and Oloroso sherries and individually numbered and bottled exclusively for The Single Malt Whisky Club – the Firkin 49 Tullibardine 2012 is a Firkin awesome whisky from the whisky legend that is Mike Collings. This month we are so firkin happy to FINALLY be able to offer a Firkin Whisky Co. release as our ‘Malt of the Month’. I say finally as we’ve featured Firkin releases in the past as our ‘Members Extra’ (and they’ve sold out every time!) – but there’s never been enough brought into Australia to be able to offer it as a ‘Malt of the Month’.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Colour: Light amber Nose: Sweet frangipani at first, but a mild salty savoury note follows closely – salami? Palate: Sweet nut brittle, stewed fruit and yet more floral notes alongside a malty milk arrowroot biscuit swirl with a delightful creaminess in the mouth Finish: A mild spice tempers the sweetness but the nutty-maltiness persists and fades out enticing you to take another sip. This is a delightfully different whisky – nutty, sweet, floral and even savoury to boot! Easy and delightful to drink strait up, but adding a dash of water separates the flavours somewhat – and certainly doesn’t lessen the impact very much at all. You won’t be ready to rinse out your glass after just one, that’s for sure

  • IT’S A FIRKIN UNICORN! A 12 year old, Double Oaked Tawny Port matured, extremely rare Single Malt from the Scottish Highlands, finished with a bit of FIRKIN magic! Exclusive in Australia to the Single Malt Whisky Club and bottled at a perfect 48.9% for your drinking pleasure. This is FIRKIN great whisky! When whisky legend, Mike Collings (the guy that created Johnny Walker Blue and Green among many others), releases something new to the world – it’s wise to check it out. When he told me last year about an upcoming couple of his ‘double wood’ casks full of 2009 Teaninich I was all ears. Not only is any single malt bottling of Teaninich extremely rare (spirits giant Diageo uses most of it in their various blended whiskies), to get a bottling that’s been ‘touched’ by the Firkin magic is a bit of a unicorn. After a bit of too-ing and fro-ing – we managed to secure the entire Australian allotment of the aptly titled ‘Firkin Rare Teaninich 2009.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Fresh, tart apple juice jumps out at first, but then a rounder, sweeter note comes through –ripe plums and vanilla. Palate: Crisp and clean mouthfeel –a little pepper but no real heat. Lots of red fruit up front – sweet plums and ripe red grapes morph into malty milk arrowroot bikkies. Finish: Very pleasing – vanilla becomes more pronounced and swirls around seeing the fruit out. A nice malty- sweetness remains at the end to chew on whilst you pour the next one (yes, you will pour a next one!). A light, yet complex dram. A bit of a Firkin enigma, really. Dry and crisp, yet sweet and juicy. Fruity, yet malty. The 48.9% gives it sufficient kick, and avoids the heat. Nicely balanced all round! Nice one, Mr. Collings!

  • Let’s FIRKIN get our whisky on! The RELEASE of not any FIRKIN WHISKY…A LINKWOOD…one of the rarest of the rare with only 1-2% ever being released as a SINGLE MALT – The Firkin Ten Linkwood 2010! The ‘Firkin Ten’ label denotes a spirit aged for 10 years prior to finishing in Mike’s custom casks. This Firkin Ten Linkwood was distilled at Linkwood Distillery, in the Speyside, in 2010. In 2020, it was bought by Mike and transferred to his hybrid, Madeira-seasoned casks where it was finished for a further two years. Bottled with no chill filtering and absolutely nothing added other than the water used to bring it down to the bottling strength of 48.9%ABV. We’re FIRKIN proud to be first to bring this new expression to market in Australia, and we’re pretty FIRKIN chuffed at the price we’ve got it for you as well!
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Rich and deep oak, more floral than fruity for me with honey hints and nutty nougat and biscuit spices well represented. Palate: Lovely luscious and oily mouthfeel with an initial burst of ‘just the right amount’ of pepper to offset the nutty, peanut brittle sweetness. There is spicy fruit mince here – but it’s certainly not the star. Nutty-caramel and dark coffee notes steal the show for me. Finish: A fantastically more-ish finish – peppery oily pulses with burnt-sugary sweet, yet somehow palate-cleansingly crisp at the same time. Delightful, but that moreish-ness seems to find me impatiently sipping another dram before I let it play right out! Another abso-Firkin-lutley sensational whisky from a man who has been creating sensational whiskies for 50 years! This is one of those ‘open it with a mate or two and next thing you know it’s all gone’ whiskies. The Firkin Ten Linkwood 2010 is a stunner!

  • Get ready for a very serious, peat forward, extremely limited edition, powerhouse of a whisky from legendary cult distiller, Dan Wooley and his highly sought after Highwayman Whisky. Our November Members Extra is the sensational Highwayman Batch 3.5 Torn and Velvety - It’s peated and it’s proud and it certainly pulls no punches. The Highwayman Whisky Batch 3.4 ‘Torn and Velvety’ was hand selected by Brad and Dan specifically for the Club and it’s so limited we are limiting it to members who also purchase the Malt of the Month. A double Tawny cask matured blend of peated and unpeated whisky from the Highwayman still located in beautiful Byron Bay. We are indeed fortunate to have been able to secure this exceptional whisky as Dan Woolley’s Highwayman Whiskies are in high demand all over the country and fast becoming a cult favourite. ‘Torn and Velvety’ is made from a blend of two casks. A first-fill, 100L French Oak Tawny cask filled with unpeated spirit – just shy of 3 years old, and a 50L Tawny cask filled with peated spirit and matured for around 2 and a half years. The result is a spectacularly fruity whisky with a peat hit to match! This is going to make our peat-freaks extremely happy. No ‘subtle wafts’ here.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Unmistakable peat influence on the nose sets the tone up front. There’s Charcuterie savouriness with some sea-salt and a few dried sweet dates around the edges Palate: Sweet, Tawny fruit notes really cut through the savoury smokiness beautifully creating a very well balanced palate. Loads of sweet fruit mince, caramel, coffee notes whilst the smoky peat provides real shoulders for them all to climb on. Finish: BIG, Long , Chewy and Robust! A real ‘peat-freak’ type of finish - the smoke swirling all around, but cut through by brilliant streaks of sweet, savoury, salty and umami in perfect harmony.

  • A Summer Whisky for only $99 from one of Australia’s legendary, award-winning distilleries? Santa, Iniquity and the Single Malt Whisky Club deliver! The perfect whisky for a hot Aussie Christmas, the latest in the much applauded and awarded Tin Shed Distillery ‘Anomaly’ Series – the Iniquity Lazy Daze. The Lazy Daze is matured in a first fill Heavens Hill ex-bourbon cask (78%) – tweaked with some shiraz (15%), tawny (3.5%) and apera (3.5%) barrels. It has been bottled at 40%ABV in order to be easy to drink yet still pack a flavour wallop! It’s sweet and fruity with next to no heat on the palate yet packs a big chewy finish. Even though it’s only packing 40%ABV, this whisky is definitely no lightweight. It’s got huge depth of flavour, big mouthfeel and …oh, did we mention it’s under a hundred bucks… in a 700ml bottle?!?!?
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Tart green apples, passionfruit, jasmine and vanilla with a note of leather too. Palate: Wow – big flavour up front with as close to zero heat as I’ve ever tasted in a whisky. Lots more classic fruit notes – citrus and banana with more passionfruit there too Finish: A lovely lingering, earthy finish with fruit mince wafting around a soft leathery oakiness with more of that classic bourbon cask vanilla jumping into the mix. Warning – this whisky is just so easy to drink it really should have a warning label! It packs a heap of flavour, but leaves all the heat behind. It’s by no means insipid or watered-down tasting but that low ABV won’t have you sweating around the BBQ when you’re drinking it. And for the price – why not throw it in a frosty highball and really cool down! The boys at the distillery recommend a mix of lemonade and orange bitters with heaps of ice.

  • This month….whiskies aged at sea! 2 different fortified barrel maturations finished on a Abalone fishing boat named ‘Maverick’ for 12 months on the high seas of The Tasman covering over 3280 nautical miles. The Malt of the Month is the Iron House Maverick Muscat SMWC Edition followed up by the Members Extra, the Iron House Maverick Port Cask. The constant movement of the ocean churns the spirit with greater interaction with the wood, extreme temperature and barometric ranging creating a hyper ageing effect taking you on a sensory voyage like no other.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Dried fruits and warm biscuit spices Palate: Lovely rich mouthfeel with minimal pepper. Initially sweet, but takes a slightly dry turn. Big sweet stewed fruit vibe up front, but there’s a nice saltyness at the back of that. Finish: Warm – not spicey. Long and quite delicious. The finish sees a real salted nuttiness develop which fades out with pleasant warmth. Wow – a real surprise with the nuttyness here – I was not expecting that! The 52%ABV is very well integrated and so easy on the palate. I love that the year at sea makes itself so well known in this whisky. That salty note is unmistakable… and delicious – it’s the ‘chef’s kiss’ to the whole story!

  • A first for the SMWC – until now, we’ve never before offered a wine!  That’s right – your WHISKY club is offering a non-distilled beverage as our Members Extra this month…and it isn’t even made from malt! But of course, this is not just any wine…It’s a very special Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir, the very wine whose barrels were used to mature this months whisky in! This is a special opportunity to sample a perfectly matched pair from an absolutely brilliant distillery and vineyard! This Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir is a superb example of ‘farm to bottle’ production.  This wine is completely produced at Iron House - from growing the grapes to crushing, fermenting and ageing. Aged for around 12 months on the wood and then bottled and laid to mature until it’s ready to drink.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Bouquet: Sweet cherries and plumbs and black berries with a backbone of mild tannins. There’s also a savoury quality floating around in the mix. Palate: Medium bodied with mild white pepper and more of those red fruits in spades. A little cola flavour too, in there somewhere. A nice balance between the dry oak notes, and sumptuous red and black fruits. Finish: Rich, long and satisfying. Chewy and mouth-watering with all those big fruits and berries washing over mild spice as it slowly fades into the occasion! This is a superb, rich and complex red that sits just as comfortable around Mum’s Sunday roast as it does a takeaway curry. It presents well strait after opening, but if you give it 10-15 minutes to breath after opening, you’ll notice a much fuller, rounder quality to this practically perfect Pinot.

  • skål! From the land of Ikea, meatballs and of course Roxette, we are super proud to continue our new world whiskies with the Australian launch of our first ever single malt whisky from Sweden! From Swedish distillery Mackmyra we have nothing short of their flagship product –The Mackmyra Svensk Ek! This is not a flat pack! It comes fully assembled from 100% Swedish ingredients and its even aged in Swedish oak (well – some of it is, read on!). Svensk Ek is the flagship of the Mackmyra core range. Originally called ‘The First Edition’, the new name translates as ‘Swedish Oak’. The whisky is aged partially in casks made from oak from the island of Visingsö, originally intended for use as ship building timber for the Swedish Royal Navy. We’ve spoken about ‘terroir’ in the past – the ‘taste’ of a region. Well, this whisky is all about Swedish terroir. It uses Swedish barley (malted onsite) from the nearby farms in the mash and ferments it with Swedish yeast.  It is then aged in 200L ex-bourbon casks. The age of the casks used in the Svensk Ek range between 4 and 9 years old.  Now, 10% of the whisky is then finished for 18 months in 30L Swedish Oak casks.  You may wonder why only 10% of the whisky is finished this way – well, in the words of the distillers – “To use more Swedish oak the whisky would be too much of all and not a good balance. 10% sound little but it’s gives very much to the mix”.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: green apple crispness and under-ripe bananas, flaky pastry vanilla slice with floral notes and a touch of marzipan sweetness. Palate: Lovely viscous mouthfeel, a light pepper burst precedes a sweet fruitiness, candied peel, honey, and vanilla with a real ginger-nut biscuit spiciness in the tail. Finish: The finish has a delightful, almost dairy feel to it. Like a citrus spiked crème brulee with extra caramelised sugar on top. Beautiful mouthfeel with a lovely creaminess just makes this such a pleasant whisky to sip on. The spiciness presents as a ‘hot ginger’ type rather than white pepper. Beautiful balance of spice and fruit as well. The Swedish oak doesn’t really present as anything ‘foreign’ or ‘out of place’ or ‘unusual’ – but I assume (from communicating with the distillery) that the ‘ginger nut spiciness’ is at least partly it’s signature. I really like this – not as a ‘novelty’ – but as a whisky, it really stands up!

  • EXTRA! EXTRA! – READ ALL ABOUT IT. PENDERYN THE HEADLINER LANDS ON AUSTRALIAN SHORES! GET YOURS NOW…ONLY AT THE CLUB! Last year we secured the ONLY Australian allocation of the Penderyn ‘Rhiannon’ and it SOLD OUT (actually some members missed out)! To back it up we have EXCLUSIVELY the 9th whisky in the ‘Icon of Wales’ series…a Jamaican Rum and Ruby Port Cask Matured Whisky, in celebration of Welsh British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George – The Penderyn Headliner. So it’s no wonder Penderyn has chosen to further immortalise such a magnificent Welshman by naming their latest ‘Icons of Wales’ expression in his honour.  What a sensational whisky this…made from fermented Welsh barley (malted in Cardiff). Distilled in Penderyn’s Faraday pot-still and aged in Jamaican Rum and Ruby Port casks for an undisclosed time before being married together, rested then bottled at 46% ABV with absolutely no colouring added, nor chill-filtering.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Lovely summer stone fruits – cherries, plumbs and peaches with a hint of tart pineapple. But there’s more than just fruit here – jube lollies, floral jasmine wafts and a hint of petrichor there as well. Palate: Crispy clean mouthfeel, with just a hint of pepper. The sweet notes on the nose don’t really carry through here as promised – it’s quite a dry affair actually. There is sweetness at first, don’t get me wrong – but it’s soon overtaken by sharp, crunchy fruit notes (think granny smith apple) backed with mild tannin-astringency. Finish: Lovely fruitiness with a sugar-gum sweetness comes through at the end but is given some pleasant edges by the white pepper notes. Crisp and clean spirit with a nice tartness that just begs to go around again as your noseing the next one.

  • Now, the whisky business doesn’t get much more serious than the Remnant Whisky Co…An EXCLUSIVE follow up to one of our biggest selling whiskies of 2022 – A mix of 10 year old Port and Sherry Casks and we’re excited to be releasing another bottling from these absolute angels of Australian whisky – The Remnant Whisky Co. Black Spot ‘SMWC #02’! This is the second release we’ve partnered with Remnant Whisky Co to bring to the Club. The first Remnant Black Spot we featured back in 2022 was an INSTANT SELLOUT and we have no doubt this one will follow suit. It’s a simply sensational 10+ year old Tasmanian whisky in a 700ml bottle at a better price than a 500ml Black Spot normally sells at! This month’s Remnant Whisky Co. Black Spot SMWC02 is blended from a selection of port and sherry casks all over 10 years old. Their abv’s at disgorging ranged from 66.2 to 42.1%abv but this whisky gem is bottled at 48.1%abv.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: A big succulent fruity nose with masses of juicy stone fruit, sweet-toasted marshmallow and freshly opened packet of Jaffa’s there too. Palate: Big, rich and luxurious on the palate with a delicious viscousness and just the merest pepper. There’s fruit that backs up the nose, sure – but also a very peasant nuttiness on the palate. Finish: Warm, soft, cuddly and long. The fruitiness mellows and there’s some mild ginger, coffee, dark chocolate and even some custard all tumbling around inside my smile as this lovely finish finally fades.. What can I say – it’s simply a very bloody nice, big, round and juicy, waaay too easy to drink Tassie whisky that I can almost guarantee you’re gonna love! There’s just… well… there’s just nothing here not to love. I don’t want to say buy two… but buy two! – you’ll not regret it!

  • Another ‘Waratah Wonder’ – this time from the wonder-ful Mr. Martin Pye and his Riverbourne Distillery - The Riverbourne Identity #9, a Limited Edition, French and American Oak matured whisky with delicate citrus and floral notes. The Riverbourne Identity #9 was made from NSW grown ‘Compass’ barley fermented using three different yeasts. The wash was distilled at Riverbourne Distillery, then aged in Cask #108 - a shaved and re-charred French Oak barrel with American oak lids - before being cut to 48% with Molongo River water then bottled. There is only 220 bottles of this whisky magnificence. This is the 9th Edition of ‘The Riverbourne Identity’ and it’s a completely different whisky than our peated Corowa Malt of the Month from Barrelhouse 28.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: An initial marmalade hit on the nose, followed by fresh-cut grass, apples and pears strait off the tree and (despite Martins claims to the contrary) I do get a subtle leathery note. Palate: Wow – a real unexpected custard-y creaminess at first, but then a rich and sweet fruitiness takes over. The sweetness of the fruit provides a nice contrast to the overall dryness of the spirit. Finish: Finish is long and sweet. A big malty surprise comes out of the whisky in the final stages. Very milk arrowroot bisquit-y.

  • This is a cask strength 'ode to the Sherry-cask'…From the masters of the single cask, Signatory Vintage, we’re proud to present this 11-year-old sherry-bomb, The Signatory Vintage Mortlach 2010 Aged 11 Years. This is a limited edition whisky with only 705 individually numbered bottles worldwide. This single malt whisky was distilled in 2010 at the Mortlach Distillery before being placed in a refill Hogshead. It was then finished in a fresh Sherry Butt for 15 months and in 2021 it was bottled at 57.8% ABV as part of the Signatory Vintage Cask Strength Collection. Mortlach’s bold flavour profile has seen it dubbed “The Beast of Dufftown” and is said to exist somewhere in between mellow and smoky. In a region renowned for its mellower, gentler ‘whisky-vibe’, Mortlach stands out for it’s robust, muscular and rich character.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Rich, fruity and lush from the get-go. Dried fruits abound, but a deeper savoury quality lurks in the background. Palate: Big fruity sherry flavours galore here. If you’re missing Christmas cake already, then you’ll love this! All the fruitcake spices, rich red fruits, chocolate and coffee notes you’re craving! Finish:  Lovely and lush, chewy and long. Those fruity notes keep going on the back of the peppery waves and the lovely oiliness keeps that finish all over the mouth. Most definitely the sherry ‘yan’ to our Malt of the Month’s bourbon ‘Ying’. All the red-fruits, fruit cake, coffee and chocolate you could ask for in a big sherry-d whisky. The rich base spirit really carries those sherry influences well!

  • Up for your drinking enjoyment is legendary independent bottlers, Signatory Vintage and their fantastic take on an Island malt – the Pulteney 2008 Aged 12 Years. A Cask Strength, marriage of Bourbon and Sherry casks with a slight salty maritime influence that will dance on your taste buds. The Pulteney 2008 Aged 12 Years was distilled (as the name suggests) at the Pulteney Distillery and aged in refill Bourbon Barrels. After around 9 years the three casks were married into a single fresh Sherry Butt for 33 months to finish. The resultant whisky is bottled at cask strength, un-chill filtered and without any additives of any kind.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Poached pears, sultanas, unburnt tobacco, with a touch of salt on the nose as well. Palate: Fruit comes through much richer and darker than on the nose. Those big, red ‘sherry fruit tones’ in abundance, but also some vanilla and buttery notes from those bourbon barrels, some pepper there too – big on the first sip, but settles thereafter. Finish: Nice hearty and long finish, the pepper presents at the front of my tongue in waves, whilst the stewed fruit seems to sit on my cheeks. That sea-side salty nuance re-appears as well. I wouldn’t go as far as to say this is a ‘sherry bomb’ – this is much more balanced than that. The buttery, vanilla from the bourbon casks is nicely complimented by the fruity, first-fill sherry cask treatment it had for just shy of 3 years. And I do get the salty maritime influence I’ve always loved from Pulteney whisky. I can only assume that Signatory Vintage have bought the Bourbon barrels aged at Pulteney prior to marrying them in their own sherry butt. The salty notes definitely lead me to believe this is likely!

  • Snowy Mountains Whisky? Make way for a super small-batch, cask strength, independent bottling of one of Tasmania’s finest distilleries aged and bottled in the highest altitude of any whisky in Australia – The Snowy Mountain Spirits Tawny! Now Mark Newton is a man who enjoys doing things a little… differently. Not only does he independently age and bottle whisky in Australia’s highest location, he brings the new-make all the way from Tassie to do it. The Snowy Mountains Spirits Tawny was born in Tassie, at the Old Kempton Distillery in fact! For those members who don’t know, Old Kempton is a well-awarded small batch distillery located just north of Hobart. So how highly regarded is Old Kempton – well they took out ‘Best Australian Small Batch Single Malt’ at the World Whisky Awards in 2022, and have just won a silver this year!
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Lots of sweet spices up front for me – cloves, allspice and cinnamon over dried fruit and tinned apricot nectar. Palate: Lovely viscous mouthfeel (almost liqueur –like), and initial burst of pepper but all the big stewed fruit comes right through like a wave. Finish: Warm, chewy, lush and lingering. Coffee and dark chocolate, sweet spiced fruit mince and just a perfect cheek pinching citrus-like astringency. This is a small, and let’s face it, high priced package, but it won’t disappoint once you taste it. The ‘Tassie distillation - Snowy Mountain maturation’ makes it hard to put a flag on, but I do know it’s a fantastic example of a Tawny matured whisky. Nicely warming, big and round and sweet – but with a lovely dry back edge that makes you pour just one more dram. Ok, and maybe one more after that…

  • Made exclusively for the Single Malt Whisky Club, aged in Cabernet casks from a renowned Clare Valley winery and bottled at a premium 55% ABV for our members. This STRICTLY LIMITED viscous single malt is a rich journey into fig jam, vanilla, fresh tobacco, rice-pudding and Italian expresso. In 2021, we introduced members to the renowned Spirit Thief Distilling Co based in Tasmania. This introduction was one of their independently bottled whiskies – the spirit distilled at Belgrove Distillery and aged in Mataro wine casks. This month we are delighted to announce another Spirit Thief offering but this time a whisky made 100% by Spirit Thief. No indy bottling this one – one of their very own!
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Stewed fruit and oak strait away but there’s a beguiling sweetness over the top as well. I say ‘wizz-fizz’, my dear old dad says boiled lollies and my son (who, at 16, has literally been smelling whisky with me his whole life) says lemonade. Whatever it is, you can (and will!) nurse this one under your schnoz and argue about it for ages! Palate: A fantastically luscious moutfeel – rich and oily. Nice and fruity without being too sweet – but there are jammy notes as well. At full strength (55% ABV) it does provide a fair pepper, but if that’s not your thing, a dash of water settles that right down. Coffee and nutty notes flow on into the finish. Finish: Settles in for a while this one. Coffee and dark chocolate rolls around roasted nut brittle and sweet pipe tobacco in the tin as it fades out with a lovely warmth. This is one of those whiskies you bring out after a good dinner with good company. Then sit back and bask in the ‘wows’. It’s big and bold, but well behaved and with a finish that you’ll chew on with a smile. Be warned though. You are gonna argue about that sweet note on the nose. Just what is it?

  • This is the very last expression ever of Spirit Thief’s independent bottlings…but what a whisky it is…a cask strength, double distilled, single cask finished in a French wine cask. The Spirit Thief Benrinnes Bordeaux Red-Wine Cask was double distilled at the Speyside Benrinnes Distillery in 2008. Bottled in 2019 it has spent 11 years in a first fill red-wine cask from Château Gruaud-Larose in the Bordaux region of France. Then bottled at a cask strength of 55.2% ABV with absolutely nothing added, and of course non-chill filtered. This is a superb example of wine cask maturation, hand selected from the Benrinnes bond-store by Tasmania’s own ‘wine-cask’ experts – Spirit Thief.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Sweet nutty nougat with a citrus twist but there’s also a slightly salty-savoury note behind the sweetness. Palate: A big spice burst first up but a solid creaminess of mouthfeel becomes apparent as the pepper fades. Big sweet red fruits cut through and there’s also crystallised ginger and custardy notes in there too. Finish: Finish is long and constantly evolving – pepper morphs to sweet fruit morphs to dry tannins.

  • From one of our absolute favourite Award Winning Tasmanian Distilleries, we have the FIRST EXPRESSION of their very FIRST ‘SOLERA’ whisky release, bottled EXCLUSIVELY for our members – The Spring Bay Solera! Now whisky aficionados know that Spring Bay whisky gets mentioned in the same circles as Sullivans Cove, Overeem and Lark and there is good reason for this, as the owners, Cam and Suzy took many influences from these legendary distillers and world agrees! With Spring Bay taking out Best Oceania Single Malt Whisky for their Tawny Port Cask at the Tokyo Whisky and Spirits Competition and three of their whiskies picked up a Gold and two Silvers at the World Whiskies Awards.
    • Award Winning Tasmanian Distillery
    • First Expression of their Solera is EXCLUSIVE to the Club
    • Chardonnay, Port and Muscat barrel maturation
    • Made with East Coast Tasmanian rainwater
Spring Bay’s is a 4 step Solera utilising different types of casks. The top layer is an ex-Chardonnay cask, then a Port cask and two final layers are Muscat casks. Batch #1 will be bottled at 48%ABV especially for The Single Malt Whisky Club, but subsequent batches will be between 43-46%.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Nose: Lots of sweet, stewed red fruit here, and a distinct new leather belt note dominates,  but a lighter floral accent also wafts around. Plate: A nice, viscous mouthfeel with incredibly well behaved alcohol warmth.  Big fruitcake flavours, but also super-dark chocolate and unsweetened espresso there as well. Finish: Nice and long – warming, but not at all hot or over the top. All those sweet and sightly bitter notes carry through and keep winding on down the road for miles and miles with a snap on the bum with a leather belt for good measure! Wow – an incredibly easy to drink, yet very complex whisky here. There’s light, there’s dark, there’s sweet, and a little astringency. There’s fruit, floral, chocolate and coffee – with that (in my humble opinion) quintessentially Australian leathery note.

  • WHISKY + WINE! In a first for the Single Malt Whisky Club you get a rare chance to experience not only a sensational Tasmanian Whisky but also the fantastic Tassie Pinot Noir that seasoned the cask that the whisky was matured in. So, get your set of glasses out, impress your friends and share the joy of both the Tasman Whisky Port Matured Pinot Finish Cask and the Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir, all made on site on the East Coast of Tasmania. This whisky is absolutely superb! The Tasman Pinot Finish Cask was distilled in Iron House’s still in Tassie in August 2017. Initially matured in 100L Portuguese ex-port casks, then to further instil the ‘Iron House Touch’ those casks were disgorged into a 200l Iron House Vineyard French Oak ex-Pinot Noir cask to finish for 8 months…and its delightfully exclusive to The Single Malt Whisky Club! But this month, we are not content to offer ‘just’ an amazing whisky…no, this month we want you to taste the whisky AND we want to give you more than just a glimpse of ‘where it came from’. This month we give you the very rare chance to try the actual wine that seasoned the barrels that the whisky was made in! The Iron House Vineyards 2018 Pinot Noir is a superb example of ‘farm to bottle’ production.  This wine is completely produced at Iron House – from growing the grapes to crushing, fermenting and ageing. Aged for around 12 months on the wood and then bottled and laid to mature until it’s ready to drink.
    OUR TASTING NOTES
Colour: A glorious deep reddy-orange. Nose: A pleasant leatheriness at first, and a salty-plum note with caramel as well as biscuit spices. Palate: A very hearty and solid mouthfeel with a nice amount of white pepper spiciness – an initial burst that diminishes quickly to be overtaken by the fruit! Lots of big red fruits – especially cherries. The biscuit spices seen on the nose are still there, but much diminished – the fruit really dominates here. Finish: A delightfully long and extremely chewy finish. A mild pepper remains around the mouth – almost as a backdrop to the swirls of fruit, caramel and A delicious whisky in it’s own right (with a seriously chewy finish) – but its made even more interesting when drammed side-by-side with a glass (or two) of the Iron House 2018 Pinot Noir that ‘seasoned’ it. The dark cherry notes and white pepper are – for me – especially notable as being common notes between the two.
